JOHN EVANS EARNED HIMSELF a great deal of respect as a do-gooder in the early 1900s, heading up a local orphanage known as the Durham Children's Home. But he was also lauded for his prowess as a do-it-yourselfer, building this sturdy tri-gabled Gothic Revival home for his family in 1910.

THIS WHITE CLAPBOARD HOUSE located at the junction of three interstates in Weare, New Hampshire, holds a special place in Betty Straw’s heart. The same goes for a lot of people in town. While Straw was growing up there during the 1930s, the house belonged to Arthur and Hazel Eastman, who owned the adjacent general store.
