ASK THIS OLD HOUSE

FINISH FOR IPE WOOD DECKING I’m planning to build a deck using ipe for the decking. But I’ve been getting many different opinions about what type of finish I should put on the wood. What would you do? TOM HOWLEY, ROCKVILLE, MD. TOM SILVA REPLIES:

Laying a Vinyl Floor

For mudroom or laundry room floors, self-adhesive vinyl tiles (commonly called "peel-and-stick") are an easy-to-install alternative to sheet vinyl or ceramic tile. The 12-by-12-inch squares have a factory-applied glue that’s protected by a removable backing sheet.

YARD WORK

The landscape plan on every home is a challenge. But when the house sits smack in the backyard of another one, as does the current TOH TV project house in Concord, Massachusetts, it can be a real head scratcher. How do you make the yard around the tiny barn-turned-cottage feel separate, distinct, and private, yet also blend it seamlessly with the landscape of the main house that overshadows it?

NORM’S NOTEBOOK

I’ve tried lots of things over the years to protect finished floors during remodeling. Plastic sheeting is too slippery; canvas tarps never stay put; and although cardboard is okay, it doesn’t offer any protection if you drop something heavy.
