ASK THIS OLD HOUSE

LEAKY SKYLIGHTS

We live in an old, crooked house on a little lake in south New Jersey. It has a sunporch with skylights that chronically leak. We’ve nickel-anddimed the problem to death with umpteen handymen (we are two old ladies, only one of whom can make it up to the roof), but nothing seems to work.

Great outdoor spaces with all the comforts of home open-ai rooms

It’s that season when the great migration outdoors begins. After months of being cooped up at home or in the office, the idea of dining under the stars, lunching alfresco, or just napping in the open air becomes irresistibly appealing. And the perfect setting for all this?

Installing Landscape Lighting

Low-voltage landscape lighting is a simple improvement that can make a huge difference in how your home looks after dusk and in its safety and security as well. The fact that I’ve been using a table saw for so long and still have all my fingers tells you how seriously I take saw safety. And one of the best safety devices I’ve found is one you can make for yourself: a stout push stick. A push stick lets you keep control of your stock while keeping your fingers well clear of the blade (which should be only 1/4 inch or so above the stock anyway).

A timeworn bungalow gets an up-to-date look old meets BOLD

MARK CONNOR AND HIS WIFE, Lee, were drawn to their tiny 1930s bungalow more for its location in a prime Boston suburb than for its outdated floor plan. The small, boxy rooms—all on one floor—consisted of a living room, dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms, and a bath.
