septic HAPPENS

Like most septic-system owners, I didn’t pay much attention to what was going on under my croquet field— until the day last spring when black gunk started oozing up from the lawn. ASK THIS OLD HOUSE

CONSTRUCTION-DAMAGED LAWN We’ve made a number of changes in our front yard over the past couple of summers—removed several large trees, rebuilt a stone wall, and added a bluestone walkway. The work was hard on our lawn and we’ve repaired the obvious damage, but with all the trucks and tractors driven around out there, I wonder if the soil has been packed down too much for the grass to grow.

installing a Picket Fence

Building a fence has been made much easier in recent years by the wide availability of preassembled fence panels, which eliminate the need to nail up pickets one at a time. Like any solid, long-lasting wood fence, this one uses durable materials, reliable connections, and deep postholes.
